Note-taking is a critical academic and professional skill that ESL students rarely practice explicitly. Students heading for university, professional development, or meetings in English need to capture key information while simultaneously processing a second language.
Divide the page into three sections: notes (right), cue column (left), summary (bottom). During listening, take notes on the right. After, add questions/keywords on the left and a summary at the bottom.
Central topic in the middle, branches for sub-topics. Good for visual learners and brainstorming sessions.
Teach common abbreviations: w/ (with), b/c (because), → (leads to), ∴ (therefore), ≠ (not equal), + (and). Students develop their own systems over time.
Encourage English, but allow L1 for speed when needed. The goal is capturing information, not language practice. Gradually increase English note-taking as proficiency grows.
